Supplies to have on hand:
Installation Procedure:
Disassembly:
1. Raise car and support on jack stands or overhead lift.
Note: Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for jacking the car.
2. Clean heavy grime and fluid contaminants from all work surfaces on the car.
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
Caution: The transmission fluid, exhaust system and other components may be extremely hot and can cause severe burns.
4. Remove exhaust intermediate pipes and front mufflers.
5. Drain fluid from current transmission.
6. Remove heat shield keeping shims intact.
7. Remove transmission cooling lines at radiator and transmission.
8. Plug cooling line outlets with fittings provided in Pack P.
9. Remove Transmission Cross Member and Mount Assy. (3 pieces)
10. Remove prop shaft (driveshaft) by unbolting at front and rear.
11. Unbolt starter and secure with wire or remove and set aside.
12. Remove transmission using the following steps:
Caution: Take care not to damage switches. The switch fasteners are especially easy to damage.
Note: Some models may require the cruise control and cigar lighter fascia plates to be removed to access retaining screws
Note: Mark wires with labels for easy reassembly later.
NOTE: It may be easier to loosen shifter cable cover from underneath car by turning the four sheet metal screws with small pliers.
Pedal Box Removal:
Caution: Be careful not to damage the brake light limit switch during removal. This switch will remain in the car for use with new brake and clutch pedal assembly.
Installation of New Transmission:
STOP! You must test shift this transmission using the instructions. Failure to do so may cause hours of extra installation time!
BEFORE YOU BEGIN: During shipment your transmission can be jostled about and the shift rails can become misaligned. Using the provided handle and hardware, or a large socket and extension, run the transmission through the gears, turning the input shaft with your hand as you shift. Remember that reverse (lower right) cannot be engaged directly from fifth gear. Test reverse by moving into the neutral position and then shifting into reverse gate.
NOTE: If you cannot rotate the input shaft by hand, remove the rubber plug in the end of the tail housing, making sure not to damage the rear output shaft seal.
If you cannot select one or more gears, call us immediately at 931.646.4836 for assistance. This is an easy issue to overcome if the transmission is on the floor. Once in the car it is not possible to make this correction.
Once installed, the transmission will never have this problem, no matter how much it is jostled around. This is a shipping problem only.
Note: All fasteners, unless otherwise noted, should be installed using two drops of medium Threadlocker (blue).
Floor Tunnel Modification

Caution: You must be careful not to damage or cut wires, ductwork or the console while drilling and cutting from underneath car. Make sure area is clear and do not allow drill bit or cutting blade to penetrate all the way into the cabin area. A second person inside the car is a good idea if available.

IMPORTANT: Lay a fender pad, cloth towel or welding pad over the top of the console to prevent metal shards from scattering over the interior of the car. Make sure the cloth does not dip into the console cavity to avoid the cutting tool binding in the cloth.

Pilot Bearing:
Note: Due to variations in the Jaguar V12 Crank, you may find that the pilot bushing is either oversized or undersized. We have done our best to establish an engineering norm for this part. If the part is incorrect you will need to measure your torque converter relief for proper fitment. Final fit for a bronze bushing should be +.001" at room temperature.
If you need a smaller bushing a local machine shop can quickly turn material off of the bushing for a very low cost.
If you need a larger bushing we have raw oversized bushings here that can be sent for turning.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this Jaguar factory variation may cause.
Flywheel:
NOTE: The flywheel to crank hub engagement is a slight interference fit. If, during the course of installing the flywheel you feel that excessive force is needed for engagement, place the flywheel in a normal oven at 350 for 20 minutes and, using oven mitts, carry flywheel to car and install immediately.
Note: Because this flywheel is fastened with provided self-centering shoulder bolts it is not necessary to use flywheel dowel pins.
Note: Pattern is top right, bottom left, top left, bottom right, second top right, second bottom left, second top left, second bottom right, center left, center right
Bell Housing Alignment:
Clutch Assembly:
CAUTION: The race balanced performance clutch provided in this kit uses a copper impregnated organic compound. Organic discs must be seasoned for approximately 200 miles to slowly boil off resins in the material for best life and performance. For best results, limit aggressive launches for the first 200 miles of use. After this short break-in you can drive as aggressively as the law allows.
Hydraulic Slave Alignment:
Isolator Mount:
Wiring Harness:
Transmission and Bell Housing Installation:
NOTE: If your shaft will not easily slide into the pilot bushing several problems may be at fault. A) Misalignment of input splines. Simply rotate by hand to align properly. B) Improper axial alignment of input shaft. Correct by adjusting angle of transmission. C) Debris in pilot hole. De-install transmission and remove debris.
NOTE: By design, the only precision fit holes in a bell housing are the dowel pin holes. These holes are responsible for accurately locating the bell on the block. Circumferential bolt holes are by necessity a loose fit.
Cross Member Mount:

Filling Transmission Case:
CAUTION: Transmission fluid is the life blood of your transmission. Proper wear and synchronization depends on the correct fluid. DO NOT USE any aftermarket fluid in this transmission. Use only GM Synchromesh (part# 12345349). Any other fluid used may cause premature where and grinding synchronizers and will VOID YOUR WARRANTY.
Wiring Harnesses:
Speedometer:
NOTE: 1988-newer model XJS vehicles use a differential driven speedometer. If you have a diff driven speedometer skip this step.
Pre-1982 Cars
1982-1988 Cars
NOTE: The gear on the transducer is selected to calibrate your speedometer according to the tire diameter and differential ratio provided to The Driven Man. If you change either of these please call for instructions on changing the gear.
Starter Re-installation:
Pedal Installation:

CAUTION: The hydraulic system, like your brake system, cannot function if the fluid reaches its boiling point. Route hose away from high heat sources as much as possible. If you are using headers you may wish to shroud the line with a heat reflective loom or tape.
Bleeding Hydraulic System:
CAUTION: Brake fluid is a highly reactive solvent and will damage paint on contact. Protect all painted surfaces from drips or spills before continuing.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE DOT 5 or any silicon based fluid. Silicon fluid will degrade the seals and cause immediate failure of hydraulic components!
Vacuum Bleeding: (if Gravity bleeding skip this step)
NOTE: This is a very low fluid volume hydraulic system. Unlike your brake system, which is larger and more forgiving, no air can exist in the lines or the system will fail to work.
Gravity Bleeding:
NOTE: If at any time the reservoir runs dry you will need to start the process from the beginning. REPLINISH RESERVOIR AS NEEDED WHILE BLEEDING.
NOTE: In order to get a full stroke on the master cylinder you may need to pull the clutch pedal up to its home position by hand until the system is partially bled. The pedal must return to the home position each time you bleed the system.
NOTE: This is a very low fluid volume hydraulic system. Unlike your brake system, which is larger and more forgiving, no air can exist in the lines or the system will fail to work.
Driveshaft (Propshaft):
NOTE: The rubber bung is interior to the rear seal and seal boot, and is concentric to the output shaft. This plug is useful if you need to remove the driveshaft and do not want to drain the gearbox. Set aside for use at a later date when needed.

Final Steps and Testing
CAUTION: At start-up, any mis-installation of the clutch or clutch release system could cause the car to lurch. The neutral safety switch should prevent in-gear starting however is it important for you to insure that the transmission is in neutral when starting.
NOTE: As with most manual transmissions, reverse is not synchronized. Engaging a forward gear before engaging reverse will make for a smoother transition.
NOTE: Your Tremec transmission is tightly tolerated to allow for break-in. Your initial shift feel, especially into first gear, may feel a bit notchy or mechanical for the first 500-1000 miles. As the transmission breaks in the shift feel may change markedly.
ENJOY!
Maintenance and Break In:
Your new transmission has a 500 mile break-in period, during which the transmission should be operated rather gently to allow the synchronized gears to self-tolerate. After this break-in period, drain your transmission into a clean pan, check for abnormal particulate in the fluid, and refill using GM Synchromesh. NOTE: Some sloughing off of material is expected. A magnet in the bottom of the transmission will trap ferrous particles, but it is normal for some aluminum and brass to be suspended in the fluid. Call if you are concerned about the volume of particulate in the fluid.
NOTE: Due to the material used for your hydraulic reservoir line, you may notice a darkening of the hydraulic fluid. This is a simple dying action and will not harm the system or degrade performance.
Routine Checks:
The following routine checks will insure long life and excellent performance over the life of your transmission.
Periodic Maintenance:
