The 5-Speed Overdrive for Jaguar

A Complete, High Quality Conversion Kit

  1. Complete Kit- ALL components are included – top to bottom – front to rear.  See below for more detail.

  2. Straightforward Installation – Conversion process is made easy with step-by-step instructions loaded with pictures.

  3. Minimal Modification – Only one (1) small 3” x 4” cutout must be made to the floor tunnel to allow the shifter to enter.

  4. Converting Back to Automatic – Converting back to automatic, if desired in the future is easily performed with almost no evidence.

  5. Warranty – Conversion is warranted for ninety (90) days, which is the warranty carried by TREMEC.

 

5-speed transmission kits work great in Jaguars with GM engines, too. Put our many years of experience to work for you!

 

Transmission Selection

 

Our kits are based on a brand new TREMEC TKO-500, TKO-600 5-speed or a T-56 6-speed. Each of these are quality, high performance transmissions.  The 5-speeds have one (1) overdrive gear and the 6-speeds have 2 overdrive gears.  Other transmissions considered were: Richmond, Getrag, Borg Warner T56 & T5, Toyota and others.  Criteria of selection was based on: load capacity, shift quality, noise, spare parts, warranty, service, cost and overall quality.

 

Performance

 

This manual transmission conversion will proved outstanding response and performance gains.

 

  1. Engine output is coupled directly to the wheels, eliminating the sluggishness associated with automatic transmission torque converter slip and hydraulic coupling.

  2. First gear is much lower than in the automatic.  Exceptional quick launces, or even tire ‘burn outs’, if desired, are easily achieved with the standared 2.88:1 differential in 1981 & up XJ5s.  No differential gear change; required for any model year.  Example: 1st gear: 2.48:1 (GM400) auto VS. 3.29:1 TKO500

  3. Subsequent gears (2nd –4th) are more closely spaced and reduce RPM drop.  Example: 2nd-3rd gear 1.48,1.00 (GM auto) VS. 1.98,1.34,1.00 2nd –4th gear TKO500

  4. Performance driving is achieved far more easily by maintaining RPM in ‘power band’ (typically 3500 & up), regardless of vehicle speed.

  5. Top speed is increased due to OVERDRIVE 5th gear ratio of 0.68. Generally, this gear is selected for efficiency.

 

Durability

 

The TREMEC TKO and T-56 series are exceptional transmission and are among the few that are strong enough to withstand V12 hp and torque output.  They will provide years of trouble-free service and fun!

 

Ride Quality

 

Original driving quality with silky-smooth engagement and shifts are easily achieved.  Gear noise associated with manual transmissions is minimal. 

 

Efficiency

 

  1. No hydraulic loss (torque converter slip, etc.)

  2. Converted car is lighter

  3. Overdrive allows RPM to be dramatically lowered at highway speeds.  This is especially helpful on pre-HE cars (pre-1981) having lower differential ratios.  Note: Only one (1) overdrive is required.  Hence, the selection of a 5-speed or 6-speed.

 

Additional Engine Cooling Capacity

 

  1. The engine cooling capacity is increased due to the absence of hot automatic transmission fluid flowing through your radiator.  You gain extra cooling capacity immediately.

  2. Narrower transmission improves air flow out of engine compartment.

 

Demonstrator Car

 

We usually have a 5-speed or 6-speed on site for demonstration. 

 

Application

 

Kit is developed to replace the Borg Warner and General Motors three or four speed automatic transmissions used for Jaguar XJ-S 1975-1996.  Additionally, it can replace the four speed gear box used in the S3 XKE V12.

 

System Components

 

  1. Transmission – Utilizing brand new, modern TREMEC TKO-500, TKO-600 or T-56 heavy duty high performance 5 or 6 speed transmission. 

·        Close ratio with Overdrive: Refined, Positive Shifting: internal rail shifting (no external linkages other than shift handle), fully synchronized in FWD gears

·        High Torque, Horsepower Capacity: rated at 450 –600 ft lbs of torque and 450-650 hp in 4th gear (more available in lower gears) – easily handles highly modified V12 engines.

·        Lightweight: 100 lbs (45kg)

·        Transmission Cross member and Mount:new cross member and proper vulcanized rubber mount are provided.

·        Pilot Bearing: new self-lubricating pilot bearing is provided.

 

  1. Clutch- Utilizing Sachs high performance, clutch assembly with comfortable pedal effort.

  • Large 10.5 inch Friction Disk:

  • High Clamp Force Plate: 2400 lb standard clamp force pressure plate minimizes unwanted slip and wear

  • Comfortable Pedal Effort: pedal effort is similar to any new sports car

 

  1. Throw-out Bearing Assembly- New integrated unit utilizing latest in modern hydraulic slave cylinder technology.

  • Completely Hydraulic System: simple, uncluttered design having no forks, pivots or linkages

  • Smooth Actuation, Long Bearing Life: direct in-line motioin provides no side-loading of bearing

  • Long Life Bearing: constant running sealed bearing

  1. Bell housing – New aluminum casting design of high strength, custom contoured and highly precision machined.

·        Precision Machined: highly accurate, CNC machined exceeding factory specifications for runout and parallelism

·        Contoured Shape: provides factory appearance blending engine to transmission

·        Direct Bolt On: no modification required to engine or transmission (typically required b adapter plates, adaptation of improper bellhousings, etc.)

 

  1. Flywheel – Specially prepared high strength, forged steel flywheel properly matched for XJS performance driving.

  • Precision Machined: highly accurate for trueness (runout, parallelism); proper face grinding preparation

  • Matched for XJ-S: proper mass/moment of inertia to provide good street driving character and quick acceleration

  • Balanced: ensures smooth operation and long drivetrain life

  • Hardened Ring Gear: ensures long starter engagement life

  • Additional Lightened: available as option

  • Aluminum street flywheel now available at unbeatable prices.

 

  1. Pedal Box, Master Cylinder and Hydraulic Lines – Completely assembled with factory appearance and performance maintained throughout.

  • New Clutch Master Cylinder: OE manufactured master cylinder with integrated reservoir ensures highest quality, long life

  • Completely Assembled, Bolt-In Unit: ready to install; pedals constructed as factory; new pads

  • All Mandrel-Bent Hydraulic Lines with Fittings: complete assortment of proper specification lines, pre-bent to exacting standards for fit: all fittings and retainers included

  1. Propeller Shaft – New, balanced high performance propeller shaft complete from end-to-end.

·        Heavy Duty Flanges and Sealed Bearings: all new flanges, front and rear and highest quality sealed bearings

·        Performance Built, Balanced: heavy duty design, balanced and rated at 10,000 RPM with high torque

·        Bolt-On: completely replaces original driveshaft

  1. Shifter & Boot – Shifter handle comes through factory opening in console – NO CONSOLE MODIFICATION.  Trimmed in premium Conolly black leather boot and leather knob, options are available for boot (colors), shifter knob (burl walnut wood and composite variations) and handle size (super short throw).

·        Ergonomically Designed Shifter: location is similar to automatic handle and shape is designed to please all users of all sizes (custom offset available)

·        Shift Knob Options: standard knob is black leather, with burl walnut wood and composite offerings available

·        Shift Boot Options: standard boot is premium Connolly black leather, optional boot color matched to interior

·        Manual Console Finisher (console cover plate) – Available as option is a brand new console finisher designed specifically for manual shifter.  Hole opening is slightly wider and proportioned for the best appearance and location.  Available in three wood options: Burl Walnut, Sap Burl Walnut, Carpathaian Elm.  This is a direct replacement piece for the stock console finisher.  Simply replace accessories (ashtray, cigar lighter, wind lift switches) to the new finisher and install as original.  This is a beautiful option, especially for pre-88 cars having black vinyl finisher plate or for later cars whose wood has become worn/cracked/damaged. (Note: complete wood refinishing service available.)

·        Lower Boot Seal: lower boot seal with retainer is included to seal shifter opening in floor tunnel

  1. Additional Features & Functions – Important aspects not to be overlooked!

·        SPEEDOMETER: Speedometer function, mechanical or electronic type is fully retained

·        Connecs to factory cables or connectors, as original

·        Both Neutral Safety Start and Reverse Indication function are retained

·        Cruise Control function, retained, is relocated to console cover for pre-89

·        REPLACEMENT NOISE ABSORPTION PAD + NEW HEAT SHIELD = IMPROVEMENT OVER ORIGINAL

·        Original worn or missing noise absorption pad (above auto Trans) s replaced with far superior quality pad having greater noise reduction properties

·        New heat shield, integrated to pad, is incorporated to reduce heat transmitted up through console as an improvement over original

·        WIRING HARNESS, FASTENERS/FITTINGS, etc.

·        All harnesses, new fasteners and fittings are included in kit.  Reuse of old hardware, where needed, is minimal

  1. Instruction Manual & Installation Support – Conversion process is made easy with step-by-step instructions. 

·        Pictures: Many pictures are incorporated to make understanding easy in any language

·        Tips & Helpful Hints: Recommended methods for implementation are explained from our experience and the experience of our resources.

·        Tools Requirement: Tools required are specified.  The conversion was designed with the weekend do-it-yourself mechanic in mind. 

·        Installation Time: All 16-24 hours labor for complete conversion
